When it comes to gardening indoors I consider myself a gardener of simple tastes. I have plenty of plants in pots, but the creativity I have in my outdoor garden doesn’t always seem to translate to what I grow indoors. For example, when it comes to displaying a floral bouquet I reach for a simple glass vase instead of something a little different such as a zinc flower vase. That’s not to say that I don’t appreciate a more exotic look and I am hoping that the research I’ve done for this article will help me to be a little more creative indoors and be inspired to go “beyond the vase”.

As I mentioned previously one way to get more creative with an indoor garden display is to change up the container that you use to display your plants. The aforementioned zinc flower vase is one example, but it could be as simple as using a bottle that has an attractive or unusual shape. A glass bottle is a great choice because it can be used as a vase or you can actually grow a plant in the bottle with only water. Check out our article on Houseplants Without Soil if you would like more information on how to do this. Terrariums are another great example of a unique indoor garden display and you can create your own terrarium or check out our beach in a bowl or mini desertscape for an easy to grow prepacked kit.

The container is just the beginning of the creative indoor decorating process. How you use that container is another way to create an eye-catching display. Suspending the container in the air, such as a hanging basket, is one way to take a simple container and make it more exotic. Wall planters can also be interesting containers. Growing up in our kitchen we had a simple wooden container that hung on the wall with a philodendron growing out it. It broke up the starkness of the wall and provided that little bit of green even during the winter months. This type of vertical display is being taken to a whole new level in many kitchens where herbs and salad plants are grown on the wall to ensure that fresh greens are available all year round. If you don’t have the right wall why not try our living ledge which can hang on a window instead of a wall.

While indoor plants are usually used to enhance our interior décor let’s not forget that they can be just plain fun too. As part of my research for this article, I came across a picture of a row of containers in a kitchen; each pot had a facial picture of a family member on it. Each container had a different plant growing in it which represented the hair on the head of that family member. This created several different looks; including long hair and short hair, curly hair, and straight hair. I can just imagine the fun that family has with this display and why shouldn’t we have fun with our indoor gardening too, right?
