I don’t know about you but at the end of a long day in the garden or after work it’s hard to beat a leisurely soaking in a nice hot bath. I find it to be a great way to decompress but did you ever consider that the relaxing surroundings of your bathroom can be enhanced by some strategically placed plants? The right plants can add style to your bathroom and make it even more of an oasis.

If you stop to think about it the bathroom may come closest to providing the ideal environment for many of the most popular houseplants. Bathrooms are usually warm places and several times a day the air becomes saturated with moisture and these humidity levels can remain high even after someone has taken a bath or shower. Towels and other surfaces continue to dry out for hours after we bathe and that evaporation process adds to the moisture levels in the air. Finally, many bathrooms also have windows and the popularity of skylights helps to bring bright, filtered light if not direct sunlight to the room.

Due to the size of the room having plants displayed on the floor is usually not an option, but there are plenty of other ways to display houseplants in the bathroom. If you have dual sinks, consider a potted peace lily or cast iron plant between them or add some shelves and have a trailing plant such as a philodendron cascading over the edge. Hanging baskets are also a great way to add that little something extra to the room; Boston ferns and Asparagus ferns love the humidity of a bathroom!  Hanging glass orbs containing air plants can also make a striking display and don’t forget your windowsills where small pots of ivy, snake plant, or aloe vera will thrive.

Most of the plants we’ve discussed so far are foliage plants, but if you are looking for a little more color you can add some African Violets or orchids which can bring an exotic feel to any room. If your bathroom is particularly bright than you might try a gardenia that will fill your bathroom with its perfume-like aroma or bring some begonias in from your outdoor garden in the fall. Even a temporary display can help brighten up your bathroom. Move your Christmas cactus to the bathroom for the holidays or buy some cut flowers such as tulips to remind you that spring is just around the corner.

Regardless of the size of a bathroom or even how much light, it gets there are houseplants that can make that room a little extra special. If you have had success with a particular houseplant in your bathroom please go to our Facebook page and share it with us.
