Sandy soils have a tendancy to drain quickly which can be a problem for tomatoes which require a consistent supply of water to grow the best fruit. The best thing to do is to work some organic matter such as compost or top soil into the top 2 to 3 inches of the soil to improve the soil's ability to retain moisture.
